Adopting a dog, how does that work?
And then the moment is there. You fell in love with that one special dog at our site ... We have chosen to give a thorough explanation of how it works to adopt a dog, because we can't answer all questions about a foreign dog.... When you show interest in a dog and you're in conversation with one of the adoption workers, she will put the code OPTION at your dog's name. This way all the adoption workers know that someone else is in conversation about this dog. Please keep in mind that we have to check in Spain if the dog of your choice is still at the shelter
First we have an intake with you. This can be by phone or by a house visit. Then we ask information about the dog in Spain and we check if that information suits you and your family. Is the dog social? What about children? Can the dog live with cats? Is the dog fearful or not? With these questions we hope to find out if the choice you made is the right one. and if you are aware of the responsibility you are about to take. After all, a straydog from Spain can behave different in a family once he is away from the shelter. We want to find a home where the dog can stay for the rest of his life! That's why it's very important for you to realize you're adopting a dog with a past. You won't adopt a dog that is well-behaved, or house-trained. The dog will need guidance and a lot of patience and love. In return you'll have a new friend! We always try to visit you before the adoption.
When the foundation and the adoption family agree with each other, you're new family member will receive the button on the website.
We're ready for the last step. We ask you to sign an adoptioncontract and the general conditions and send them to: Mevr. Teunie Bossenbroek-Bosveld, secretaris Second Chance Foundation Nederland(SCF) Graafjansdijk A71 4554 AG Westdorpe
At your request we can send you a copy of the forms.
When we have received the forms and the money we can contact Spain to prepare your dog for the trip to Holland. Yu can pay the money to accountnumber 1026.44.039, referring to St. Second Chance Foundation in Arnhem. Please mention the LL-number of your dog.
The IBAN number NL14RABO0102644039
BIC RABONL2U
As soon as we received the €. 225,00 , your dog will get the code
Why do I first have to pay before the adoption is ready?
Your money first goes to the shelter so your dog can be prepared for the trip to Holland. The shelter doesn't have a eurocent to pay the costs in advance. The shelter has enormous financial problems, mainly caused by the high medical costs of all the shelter dogs.
Please keep in mind that the period between adoption and the flight can take at least 2 weeks and sometimes a bit longer.
Why € 225,00?
Shortly:
- €. 130,00 veterinary costs
- €. 70,00 transport
- €. 25,00 medisch fund SCF
veterinary costs: spaying/neutering, vaccinations (rabies & cocktail), prevention of worms and flees, blood tests (Mediterranean Sea diseases), EU-passport and a chip. after the spaying/neutering the dogs stay in different kennels to prevent the danger of infections.
Your dog will be chipped. However the chip doesn't have your name on it yet but the name of the foundation Prodean. So it's very important that you will make sure the chip will be put on your name. Your veterinarian has the right forms for you but you can also use an application form of the website: http://www.databankgezelschapsdieren.nl/
If you still have a question or you would like some more information you can contact one of our adoption workers. To find them: click on the button "contact". What if you change your mind before the flight? That would be a pity. If you didn't think it through good enough, too bad. Especially for the dog!!! Of course there are also other unforeseen circumstances.
We understand that you would like us to return the adoption money. We hope you can understand that we can't return the total amount of the adoption money.
As you can read in the text above, we have transferred the money to Spain to prepare your dog for the flight. That happens immediately after we have received the money. When you tell us you can't go through with the adoption before the flight we can only return the transportcosts of € 70,00. Please remember that you give us the order to prepare the dog, by transferring the money to our account. This way you start the procedure in Spain.
What if things go wrong?
Despite all good intentions, sometimes it occurs that an adoption doesn't seem to end well. It is very important that you don't give up immediately! It would be unfair to the dog who has gone through so much already. Sometimes we forget that the dogs have been through a lot at the shelter and in their lives before the shelter. They need time to adjust to their environment. The reason why they end up at the shelter is often unknown. That their lives weren't pleasant is a fact. It was a big change for them to end up at the shelter, flying to another country, to another family is another big step. Often the dogs are tired and need to recover.
We are aware of the fact that sometimes it just doesn't work. Because the match doesn't work or there isn't one at all. From experience we know that a mismatch happens rarely. More often it occurs that a person or family who adopts a dog doesn't realize how much time and effort it will take to raise a dog with a past. If the dog needs to be placed in another home we try to find a foster home as soon as possible. This may take a while.. The SCF assumes that the dog can stay with you untill a foster home is found.
